Tips to Help Get Your Kids Moving in the Morning
- Have a bedtime routine that allows for your children to get enough sleep. When kids don’t get enough sleep they have difficulty moving in the morning and getting their brains ready to learn. Make sure they’re going to be early enough to help them be less grumpy in the mornings.
- Create a consistent morning routine or schedule that stays the same no matter what. Try to keep the routine simple. Routines can include getting dressed, making the bed, and brushing teeth. Don’t be tempted to let your child sleep in after a later night. The slightest change can lead to a major meltdown.
- Practice the morning routine on a non-school day or play it out (role play) with stuffed animals. Pretend to be the whiney student and have your child play the parent. Don’t be afraid to be silly to help them understand how difficult it can be to wake them up when you have a deadline to meet.
- If you have more than 1 child getting ready for school, consider waking them up at different times by staggering them for 15 minutes. Help the child who moves slowly first and then go up from there.
- Prepare the night before. Have clothes, socks and accessories picked out, take baths or shower and make sure all of their homework, daily sheets, and any additional papers are signed and in their backpack. Don’t forget to make their lunch or give them money for lunches the night before! Put backpacks and lunch bags near the door so they don’t forget in the morning.
- Send breakfast in to school with your child or give them breakfast money so they can eat with their friends. Time is provided every morning for students to eat together when they get off the bus.
- Be the parent model for positive morning behavior. Show excitement to start a new day (even if you haven’t had your cup of coffee yet). Try to get up a few minutes earlier than your child, drink a cup of coffee and when waking them up, encourage them to have a great day full of good choices!
